Glaucoma is a disease which exhibits a characteristic optic neuropathy which may result in progressive visual field loss. The most important risk factor is raised IOP secondary to reduced aqueous outflow through the filtration angle. On a molecular level, glaucoma of diverse etiology is linked by the presence of endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecule 1 (ELAM-1), which indicates activation of a stress response in the trabecular meshwork cells of eyes with glaucoma.
